Dr Quentin Spender - CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services)

I worked as an NHS consultant psychiatrist from 1995 until 2018, including seven years as consultant in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in Wolverhampton; and 11 years in Chichester, during which I was also a Senior Lecturer at St George’s Medical School (London). I am also a fully qualified Family Therapist. I retired for the first time in 2014, and then worked in a variety of Locum posts. I retired for the second time in July 2018, and I have since been developing a combination of different sorts of independent work, including clinical work for Psychiatry-UK, clinical work for OWL Independent Therapy; and medico-legal work for Expert in Mind, as well as for others.

With several co-authors, I published a textbook on Child and Adolescent Psychiatry; the first edition in 2001, and the second in 2011. I have participated in research on the treatment of Conduct Disorder and ADHD. I have worked closely with Paediatricians in a number of ways, including taking the lead in a learning programme for the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, known as the ‘Child in Mind’ Project. This aimed to give Paediatricians-in-training a grounding in Paediatric Mental Health. In addition to Paediatric Liaison Psychiatry, Family Therapy, ADHD and Conduct Disorder, my clinical interests include Depression, Self-Harm, PTSD and ASD.

I have particular experience in the assessment of Autistic Spectrum Disorders, having worked recently for a year in the Winnicott Centre in Manchester, as part of the Autism Assessment Team there; and also for 18 months in Swindon CAMHS, where I was also part of the Autism Assessment Team. So I am relatively up to date in the application of the NICE Guidelines to clinical practice in the assessment of possible ASD.
